Recovering work in Marigold with the Autosave feature

Gone in the blink of an eye? Chances are your hard work can be saved. Follow these steps to recover your Marigold session

Periodically saving your Marigold workspace is the best way to ensure that your layers and products stay just the way you want them. Occasionally though, your session may be closed without saving and it feels like you may have to start over or continue from an earlier version. In many cases you can recover your work using Marigold's autosave feature. Follow these best practices to make sure you never lose any progress.

Marigold has closed without saving

 This can happen for a few reasons, the primary reason is timing-out. To ease constraints on Descartes Labs' cloud based infrastructure, Marigold sessions are programmed to time-out after an hour of inactivity. You may return to your computer after a period of time to see the below notification that your connection to the server has been lost. It's also possible that you closed your browser with multiple tabs open and inadvertently exited your session.

Don't panic!

If you see this window on your screen, simply click refresh and Marigold will reload into a new session. To recover your work:

  1. Click Load from the top panel menu
  2. Select autosave.sav and click Load Project
  3. Save your work. Click Save from the top panel menu and name your saved file. If you use a previously existing name, it will overwrite that file.

Tips and Considerations

  • The autosave feature only works on one Marigold session at a time. While Marigold supports a user working in separate instances at once, the autosave.sav file will only be associated with one and both cannot be recovered

  • The autosave.sav file backs up your work every five minutes, so it is possible to lose some work if Marigold closed as the result of a rare crash or an accidental closure. It is best not to rely on this feature.
  • To avoid accidentally closing Marigold with other tabs in your browser, consider installing the Marigold as an "App". This will keep Marigold in its own window, and even allow you to create a shortcut on your taskbar or desktop. {link to instructions on how to do so}
  • It is wise to occasionally create versions of your workspaces by clicking Save and appending a version number to the file name.
